My Adventures with Symantec End Point Protection 11 – Endlessly Pointless

by Klaus Graefensteiner 23. May 2009 10:48

This is a short blog post and for some people, who try to troubleshoot strange network problems on Windows Vista or Windows 2003 Server, this post might be an important one. I don’t want to spent too much time with this, because Symantec End Point Protection 11 already cost me many hours, dollars and gray hairs. It is a very sad example of an extremely poor quality software product. I recommend un-installing it and I hope that you will get your money back. The following six strange network behaviors were all solved by removing Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.

Hazardous Cliff - Stay Back!

Symantec Endpoint Protection - No Point, No End and No Protection

Figure2: Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.3001.2224

If Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.3001.2224 and you experience the following problems, then this applies to you.

Issue 1: Blue screen on Windows Vista Ultimate 64 SP1

The memory dump pointed to a driver problem with Teefer2.sys, which is installed and used by Symantec End Point Protection 11. Un-installing it fixed the problem.

Issue 2: System process using 100% CPU on Windows Vista Ultimate 64 SP1

With the help of ProcessExplorer from Sysinternals I found that the thread that was using all the CPU loaded also Teefer2.sys. This driver is used by Symantec End Point Protection 11. Un-installing it fixed the problem.

Issue 3: Very slow Rockwell FactoryTalk OPC browsing performance

If you are trying to browse remotely the namespace of an FactoryTalk RSLinx Enterprise server and expanding the different folders takes several seconds, but just a fraction of a second locally, and you have the FactoryTalk Live Data system running on a VMWare Workstation 6.5 virtual machine, and your host runs Symantec Endpoint Protection 11, then un-installing it might fix this problem.

Issue 4: Slow http round trip times

If http roundtrip times take very long on your machine that is running Symantec Endpoint Protection 11, but is very fast on your colleagues' computer, who is not running it, then guess what? Un-installing it will fix the problem.

Issue 5: Computer not reachable via RDP

You are trying to remote desktop into a server, but every now and then you get a strange message box telling that the target computer is un-reachable via RDP. Try un-installing Symantec Endpoint Protection 11, and chances are, that this won’t happen again.

Issue 6: Frozen Windows explorer during file copy

You are copying files on the network. Everything runs fine initially, but every now and then your explorer completely freezes up and you need to reboot your machine. Un-installing Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 will fix this problem as well.

Summary

If you are having network problems and you are running Symantec Endpoint Protection 11, try un-installing it and chances are, that the problems are gone!
